Karatu

Arusha Region, Northern Tanzania

About

Karatu

Karatu is a lush highland town nestled between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, sitting at an altitude of roughly 1,400 metres. Often called the 'Garden of Eden' of Tanzania, the area is characterised by fertile red soils, coffee and wheat plantations, and a cool, temperate climate that stands in striking contrast to the surrounding savannah. The region is home to the Iraqw and Datoga peoples, whose agricultural traditions offer fascinating insight into highland Tanzania.

Our Insider Tips

Use Karatu as a base for Ngorongoro. Most budget and mid-range lodges use Karatu as the base for Ngorongoro Crater day trips — it is 45 minutes from the crater rim and offers excellent value versus staying on the rim itself.

Try the local market on market days. Karatu's weekly market brings in Iraqw, Datoga, and Maasai traders from the surrounding highlands — one of northern Tanzania's most authentic and colourful rural markets.
