About

Mto wa Mbu

Mto wa Mbu — Swahili for 'River of Mosquitoes' — is a vibrant market town at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Despite its name, it is one of Tanzania's most culturally diverse settlements, with over 120 ethnic groups represented. The surrounding area offers rich agricultural land, banana plantations, rice paddies, and the nearby Lake Manyara. Village walks and bicycle tours offer an authentic glimpse into rural Tanzanian life.

Our Insider Tips

A village walk here is underrated. Most tourists rush through Mto wa Mbu on the way to Manyara. A 2-hour village walk in the late afternoon offers excellent cultural insight and photography opportunities.

Buy fresh produce for picnic lunches. The market sells excellent tropical fruit, vegetables, and local snacks at very low prices — ideal for self-catering safari groups stocking up before Ngorongoro or Tarangire.
