Moshi
Moshi is a relaxed town at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and the primary base for all Kilimanjaro treks. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Africa's highest peak, the town has a pleasant highland climate and a well-developed infrastructure for climbers. Beyond Kilimanjaro, Moshi is a charming base in its own right: the Chagga people's rich culture, the Materuni waterfalls, and the nearby coffee farms offer excellent day trips for those acclimatising before a summit attempt.

Kilimanjaro Views from Town
On clear mornings the entire summit of Kilimanjaro is visible above Moshi's rooftops and markets — the classic view that appears on a thousand Tanzania postcards.
Kilimanjaro Coffee Cooperative
The KNCU (Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union), established in 1932, is one of Africa's oldest coffee cooperatives. Visits offer fascinating insight into Chagga coffee culture.
Our Insider Tips
Acclimatise with a Materuni waterfall day trip. A Materuni half-day at 1,700m on the day of arrival in Moshi provides useful gentle altitude acclimatisation without the rush of reaching Kilimanjaro gate.
Book your trek operator from Moshi. Moshi-based operators are often better value and more accountable than operators in Arusha or Nairobi who subcontract anyway.
