Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated wildlife reserve and the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem. Covering 1,510 square kilometres of rolling grassland and acacia scrub, it is renowned for its extraordinary lion population and year-round game viewing. From July to October the reserve witnesses the Great Migration's most iconic river crossings, as wildebeest and zebra ford the crocodile-filled Mara River in one of nature's most spectacular events. The surrounding Mara Triangle and private conservancies extend the wilderness and offer exclusive game drives away from crowds.
Attractions & Wildlife
Mara River Crossings
The defining wildlife spectacle of Africa — wildebeest leap into crocodile-infested waters in their hundreds, in dramatic scenes that can last all day and repeat multiple times.
Cheetah Plains
The Mara's open short-grass plains are among the best places in Africa to watch cheetahs hunt at full speed — often in broad daylight, giving extraordinary photographic opportunities.
Mara Triangle
The western section managed by the Mara Conservancy, with excellent road maintenance, lower visitor density, and spectacular views across the Oloololo Escarpment.
Hot Air Balloon over the Mara
Floating above the plains at sunrise as herds move below and the Mara River glints in the early light — a genuinely unforgettable experience.
Maasai Cultural Visits
Visits to authentic Maasai manyattas around the reserve offer insight into one of East Africa's most iconic cultures — warrior traditions, beadwork, and jumping dances.
Our Insider Tips
Book a private conservancy camp. The Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, and Ol Kinyei conservancies border the reserve and offer night drives, walking safaris, and off-road driving not permitted inside the national reserve.
Arrive by September 1st for peak crossings. Mid-August to late September is the absolute peak for Mara River crossings. Book accommodation 12–18 months in advance for this window.
The Mara is exceptional year-round. Even without the migration (Nov–June), the resident game is exceptional — lions, elephants, hippos, leopards, and cheetahs are reliably seen every month.
