Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park — formerly the Selous Game Reserve — is Africa's largest national park, covering over 30,000 square kilometres of miombo woodland, floodplains, and the life-giving Rufiji River system. Unlike Tanzania's northern circuit, Nyerere remains largely free of tourist crowds, offering a genuinely off-the-beaten-path experience in vast, unspoiled wilderness. The park supports extraordinary wildlife including the continent's largest wild dog population, enormous hippo and crocodile concentrations, and one of Africa's greatest elephant populations.
Attractions & Wildlife
Rufiji River Boat Safaris
Drifting along Africa's largest river delta system in an open boat, past pods of hippos, prehistoric crocodiles, and fish eagles overhead — the most distinctive safari experience in southern Tanzania.
African Wild Dogs
Nyerere has the largest African wild dog population in Tanzania and one of the biggest on the continent — the open miombo woodland is perfect for watching these extraordinary, endangered predators hunt.
Walking Safaris
Guided walks through the miombo woodland with armed scouts — tracking elephant, lion, and buffalo on foot in one of Africa's least-visited wildernesses.
Manze Lake & Siwandu Area
The network of lakes around Manze and the Siwandu camp area offers boat, drive, and walk combinations in one of the most wildlife-dense sections of this vast park.
Our Insider Tips
Fly in — the roads are long and dusty. Driving from Dar es Salaam to the park takes 4–5 hours. A 45-minute charter flight from Dar or Zanzibar drops you directly into the heart of the park.
Combine with Zanzibar for a classic southern circuit. Nyerere + Zanzibar is Tanzania's best-kept secret combination — remote, authentic wilderness followed by stunning beaches. Far less crowded than the northern circuit.
Wild dog sightings require morning game drives. Wild dogs are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Ask your guide to radio-track known packs.
