Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is one of Africa's most extraordinary natural wonders — a vast inland delta where the Okavango River fans out into the Kalahari Desert, creating a lush labyrinth of channels, lagoons, floodplains, and islands covering over 15,000 square kilometres. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the delta supports exceptional concentrations of elephant, lion, leopard, wild dog, and hippo alongside over 400 bird species. Explored by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) and small motorboat, it offers an intimate, water-based safari experience found nowhere else on earth.
Attractions & Wildlife
Mokoro Safaris
Gliding silently through papyrus channels in a traditional dugout canoe poled by a local guide, watching elephants drink from the banks and fish eagles cry overhead — the quintessential Okavango experience.
Chief's Island
The largest island in the delta and one of Africa's premier big game areas, with exceptional concentrations of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and elephant accessible from exclusive lodges.
Wild Dogs Sightings
The Okavango is one of the best places in Africa to see African wild dogs — the continent's most endangered large predator — with numerous resident packs in the Moremi area.
Walking Safaris on Islands
Island walking safaris in the delta are extraordinary — tracking game on foot through pristine wilderness, with only the sounds of birds and insects and the distant splash of hippos.
Floodplains at Sunset
The delta's vast seasonal floodplains at sunset — with silhouettes of elephants and buffalo against an enormous African sky and the sound of hippos calling — is genuinely one of Africa's greatest sights.
Our Insider Tips
Fly into the delta. Light aircraft transfers between camps are expensive but transform the experience. Flying low over the channels, islands, and elephant herds is spectacular and saves days of overland travel.
Book the dry season for big game. July–October brings game concentrations around permanent water channels and is the best period for predator sightings and large elephant herds.
Combine with Moremi Game Reserve. Moremi occupies the eastern delta and offers a mix of water-based and game-drive activities in one of Africa's most wildlife-rich areas.
