About

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls — known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, 'the smoke that thunders' — is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and the world's largest waterfall by combined width and height. Straddling the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the falls stretch 1,708 metres wide and plunge 108 metres, generating a roar heard 40 kilometres away and a permanent column of spray visible from miles away. The surrounding national parks support exceptional big game, and the Victoria Falls town is a hub for adventure activities from white-water rafting to bungee jumping.

Our Insider Tips

Visit the Zimbabwe side for the best views. The Zimbabwe side provides the most dramatic and complete panoramic view of the falls. The Zambia side is better for Devil's Pool and the Knife Edge Bridge.

Full moon nights are extraordinary. A lunar rainbow forms in the spray of the falls on full moon nights — a rare natural phenomenon. The falls are open for night visits around the full moon.

Low water reveals more, high water overwhelms. Mar–May floods the gorge with maximum volume and spray. Aug–Jan gives lower water but allows Devil's Pool and better views into the gorge below.
