Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is Tanzania's most iconic wildlife destination, spanning 14,763 square kilometres of open savannah, woodland, and riverine forest. Home to the world's largest terrestrial mammal migration — over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle — it offers some of Africa's most dramatic wildlife spectacles. The park is also one of the best places on the continent to spot all of the Big Five, and its clear skies make for unforgettable stargazing.
Attractions & Wildlife
The Great Migration
Over 1.5 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra move in a massive clockwise circuit across the Serengeti and Masai Mara each year, crossing crocodile-filled rivers in scenes of raw, spectacular chaos.
Seronera Valley
The park's central hub and one of Africa's most reliable big-cat zones, with resident lion prides, cheetahs, and leopards draped over acacia branches year-round.
Grumeti River
In May and June the western corridor's Grumeti River hosts early migration crossings, with massive resident Nile crocodiles lying in wait — dramatic, intimate, and far less visited than the Mara River.
Hot Air Balloon Safaris
Drifting silently over the golden plains at dawn, watching the savannah unfold below from a hot air balloon, is one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife experiences.
Kopjes
Scattered granite outcrops that emerge from the plains like islands, kopjes are favourite haunts of lions, leopards, hyraxes, and klipspringers — and offer spectacular panoramic views.
Our Insider Tips
Chase the migration north. The Mara River crossings (Jul–Oct) are spectacular but crowded. Visit the Grumeti in May–June for equally dramatic crossings with far fewer vehicles.
Stay central for year-round cats. Even in the green season when the wildebeest are far south, the Seronera remains one of Africa's top cat-spotting areas — and rates drop significantly.
Bring a red-light torch for night skies. The Serengeti has virtually zero light pollution. On a clear night the Milky Way is so bright it casts shadows. A red torch preserves your night vision.
